The tufted puffin (Fratercula cirrhata) also known as the crescent puffin might look like a penguin you’d see in the Antarctic. They are actually found all up and down the west coast of the United States! They have a bright red bill and white tufts on top of their heads.

They enjoy making nests on islands and cliffs. So the next time you are visiting Washington’s Olympic Peninsula and are on the coast, keep a keen eye out. One of the more popular places to see them is at Cape Flattery, the northwestern most point in the lower 48. A few minutes outside of Neah Bay, Cape Flattery has lovely cliffs and an island (Tatoosh Island) that make it a great habitat for this seafaring bird.
